it should be noted however that I switched back to CoverSutra again, thus losing the chance to love one track, because Bowtie stop scrobbling after a while, even with the above workarounds :(

Thank you! I am new to Bowtie and was having this problem on OSX 10.5. The checkbox was marked but it failed to scrobble. The issues was fixed when I made the selection via the upper tray.

simply put, many applications that does control itunes that are running from the menu bar have last.fm integration by simply following last.fm APIs.

All they do is storing your last.fm username/password combo (or access the existing keychain items) and start scrobbling.

scrobbling means telling last.fm that you actually listened to the current song.
usually in non official last.fm clients scrobbling happens at 60% of the song duration, howerver scrobbling should not happen < 50%.

Some other client apart Bowtie also integrate advanced last.fm functions, like the chance to "love" the track, which essentially is a bookmark to the current song, and send it over to last.fm.

Bowtie still doesn't integrate advanced last.fm support.

I stopped using the official last.fm client + itunes due to the client sucking 100% cpu at certain times.
